Security (Peace): Establishing and maintaining harmony in our relationships and providing freedom from fear or threat of harm through expressions of vulnerability, deepening of trust, and the successful resolution of conflict. (Romans 12:16,18)
The need for Security can look a little different for each person. One person may see security when they have the doors locked so they feel safe from harm. Did you know that Security can also look like: “Will you be here for me?” “ Will you help provide for some of my emotional and physical needs?” “I need to have a handle on this circumstance or I will feel afraid!” “I like to have a plan.” ‘I don’t like change.” “I need to feel supported.”
Maybe Security is one of your top needs, and honestly you are confused by it. Maybe you are trying to understand why Security popped up as one of your top needs. Let’s look a little deeper.
What was your childhood like? Were both parents in your home? Did they get along, or was there a lot of fighting between them? Did you move a lot? Did you have good friends? Were your physical needs met: food, clothes, shelter, etc.? Did you see and hear your parents worry how they would pay the bills or buy food? Could you trust the adults in your life, or did they consistently let you down? Were addictions part of your family dynamic? Was your home cluttered and disorganized? Were you always wondering what the evening would be like when you returned home from school?
There could be many variables that led to anxiety, fear, worry and concern when you were little, and that could result in a high need for security in your life as an adult. Did any of the above issues characterize your childhood? Do you see how it may have produced a high priority need for security now?
The need for security can bring along side effects like fear, anxiety, worry and depression. When you recognize that you have a God-given need and the “why” behind it, THAT….can lead to freedom! Maybe you need to express to your loved ones your need and how they can help meet that need. Maybe you need to discover first how that need is even met! Pray! Ask God to reveal why you have this need as such a high priority and what makes you feel secure!
We all have needs. Don’t feel like you are a failure because you need “security” or any of the other needs because God created us that way! Each of us are unique, needy and created that way by our Heavenly Father. No shame here…just freedom in discovering the Truth!
1 .Hebrews 13:5 reminds us how near God stays. Invite Him into your heart and mind!
2. Let’s do Hebrews 14:6 and come to God with confidence in worship and prayer and being still before Him. Let Him remind you how much He loves you and proves it every day!
3. Remember the nearness of God and how He helped relieve fear and bring peace to you before. Praise Him for that and tell someone else about the love of Jesus in your life
