Appreciation : Expressing thanks, praise or commendation, particularly in recognition of someone’s accomplishments or efforts. Gratefully acknowledging what someone “does” (Colossians 3:15 b, 1 Corinthians 11:2)
How do you show appreciation when your husband/wife helps out? I mean, we all have our “normal jobs” around the house, don’t we . …take out the trash, vacuum, dust, grocery shop, load the dishwasher… to name a few. When your spouse does your “normal job”, don’t you appreciate him/ her so much!
We go about our day doing our “normal stuff”, then all of a sudden our spouse does what we normally do! Wow!!! We could do a celebration dance, couldn’t we? Not only do you appreciate what they did, but don’t you also feel special…and especially appreciated? Yes!!! You feel noticed, valued, appreciated because that special someone entered your world and took some work off your plate. I imagine they’d love it if we returned the favor sometimes…for no particular reason …. just because.
When your spouse does something kind and thoughtful for you, please acknowledge it! Show your appreciation for what was done with YOU in mind! The reason your spouse would do your “normal” job is because he/she wants you to know how special you are!
What about in the office/neighborhood/church? Appreciation can be shown in a variety of settings. In the office, what if you did more than what was expected of you, not for a pat on the back but simply because you could. What if your co-worker was over-whelmed, then you ask, “May I help you with something?” Talk about BEING the Light of Jesus! Appreciation is more than “what” you do for someone but includes “why you do it”.
Does a neighbor need help? Can you bring in a trash can after trash pick-up? Is there someone at church to whom you can show appreciation? How about bringing in donuts for those that start early on Sunday morning to get church ready for everyone else?
Appreciation is expressed with words, that’s true, but appreciation can be shown by an act of kindness. Call it whatever you like, but I call it letting “your light shine before others”.
We appreciate your taking time to read this installment of the 52 Week Plan!
Please take 30 seconds and ask God to give you one or two ways to show appreciation for your spouse, your children, a neighbor, a staff or volunteer at church, or a co-worker. Take out your phone and put those few items on the calendar or list of things to do for this week. Then, just do them!
