The Real You (you)
Ever heard anyone say they “don’t recognize themselves any more” or that “they want to get to know the real person inside them, otherwise known as the real “me”? I have an idea. Stated simply, “I don’t think we ever really know who we truly are with all our weaknesses, strengths, likes, dislikes, feelings, and thoughts until we get to know more about Who God is.” I’m serious! A journey to get to know “the real you” has many twists and turns because we change so easily, our moods come and go, and even some of our beliefs are not as firm at one time as they are at others. Nailing down the “real you” can be frustrating, unless…….
The ” real you” depends on discovering the “The Real You”. The capital “Y” means the real person God designed us to become! He revealed Himself through His Son Jesus Christ and in a limited way through creation. Jesus is the “express image of the Godhead in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9) A video of an old time preacher that I happened across this week contained a truth that amazed me. He stated that a friend had read the major “holy books” of the top religions of the world. As a result of his study, he was captured by the truth of the New Testament scripture revealing that our God takes up residence in His followers. Only Jesus makes it possible for His Holy Spirit to change us from the inside out!
The Holy Spirit accomplishes this when He comes to indwell followers of Christ. We become the temple God lives in. No other “holy book” or religion makes that claim. No other God can or will enter the person to do a transformation of that person into His image. Holy Spirit’s jobs from His inside position include the following: to remind us of what Jesus said, to guide us into all truth, to apportion gifts to believers and to produce the fruit that reveals our being conformed to Christ’s image.
As we are changed into Christ’s likeness, the “real you” becomes the same as the Real You in character, love, perspective, and wisdom. Certainly we won’t equal God in power, love, or full character; but knowing Jesus, worshipping the Father, and being controlled by Holy Spirit helps us become real….finally the real person we were created to be in the first place. That process will take at least a life time and maybe longer!
