Why Be Someone Else….when….

Have You Ever Dreamed of Being

(or Ever Wanted to Be) Someone Else?

I can understand the answer for many of us could possibly or even emphatically be “YES”! You may have wished you could change the way you look and be more attractive, fewer skin problems, a different shaped nose or chin, different color hair, or a more attractive physique. Don’t you think many of those kinds of wishes are common? I do.

I could go off on a tangent here and delve into the “trans” conversation, but I won’t. I will say that wishing we were someone else or a different “me” has been happening for a long time and has become increasingly dramatic and consequential with the changing culture. Changing hair color is much less dramatic than trying to change gender! Changing hair color is relatively simple. Changing gender is impossible, even if I can change which gender I resemble.

Under the skin and right to the heart of the matter is the self-worth of those of us who wish we were different or who would like to be someone else entirely . If I could convince you of your value and worth by waving a magic wand, I would. If I could persuade you to know that you are enough, that you are a priceless treasure, and that you are loved …extremely loved, I would do it in a heartbeat, but I can’t.

I can give you some things to consider:

  • You are created with an intricate design
  • You were known from before you were born
  • Your being here on the planet matters
  • Your life will impact hundreds of others…maybe more
  • No matter what you’ve experienced….you belong

Some may have told you otherwise. They may have communicated with words, actions, or lack of words or actions that …

  • …You are only a random blob of cells (wrong!)
  • …No one knows you or cares (wrong!)
  • …You don’t matter (wrong!)
  • …You will only hurt others and/or be hurt by others (wrong!)
  • …You don’t belong anywhere (wrong!)

Here is what I know is true of you!

David, the writer of this Psalm, is talking to God-

Psalm 139:13-17 – For you created my inmost being;

    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you

    when I was made in the secret place,

    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

    all the days ordained for me were written in your book

    before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!

    How vast is the sum of them!

There are so many ways that the Enemy of our Soul wants to convince us that we are not enough, you don’t matter, and that your life doesn’t count. Please remember what Jesus said about Satan in John 8:44 – “He is the father of lies” and a “murderer from the beginning”.

Not the enemy, nor the world’s culture, nor our “friends”, not even our own reasoning can be trusted with our true value and identity. Only the God Who made us, loves us, and wants us in His life forever can be trusted with such vital influences and truths.
