You Don’t Have to Be All Things to All People….

It’s A Little Like Gravity

Even if you don’t read today’s article, would you listen to the song at the end.

Some things feel inevitable. I have heard it said “there are only two things in life that are certain – death and taxes! Thankfully that saying isn’t true, and furthermore I am not that pessimistic. But I have noticed that “getting too busy” seems to fit this category of inevitability, doesn’t it?

The reason I am writing about it today is that, even as an empty nesters, Carol and I have to fight for time to invest in ministry to others, have focused time together, complete the list of needed tasks, and find time to enjoy and communicate with family and friends. I know this is normal, or at least the “being too busy” phenomenon is among the folks we know.

As this year draws to a close and especially as Christmas time approaches, may I ask you to join me taking time each week – even if it is just 10 minutes – to think and pray about what God wants your priorities to be? What personal priorities would bring a smile to Jesus’ face? What top 5 priorities that are real and activated would help you make the end of this year and into 2025 more of what you truly want them to be? (wow, I can’t believe we are almost in 2025-that’s my point)

Is it simply because I am getting older that I am talking about “making the important things in life” our actual priorities? No, that isn’t it, since I have been getting older as long as I have been alive. However, at my age I know where my regrets are. I truly don’t want to create any more.

You decide for yourself, as I will for myself, what order these potential priorities will take:

Me Time – to think, review, evaluate, relax, rest, learn, exercise

Others Time – ministry to others, helping, investing, listening, enjoying, befriending

God Time – praying, meditating on Scripture, learning His truth, listening to Him, worshipping, studying His truth, serving and obeying Him

Other: making money, playing, sleep, eating healthier, couple time, friends time, picking up a new activity, getting a job, being involved in a worthy cause that is enduring

I know there are a myriad of others options I didn’t list, but I don’t want you to have to stay in this article so long that you don’t have time to set your own priorities. I am not sure how many days I get to stay here on planet earth and prepare for eternity, but this I know – I don’t want to have to say, “What if I had only …..?” At least I can choose now what investments I want to make with the time I have left.
